Welcome!

Welcome to Wild Rose Breads! I make breads that are leavened with naturally occurring strains of wild yeast that have been nurtured and grown right here in Dexter, Michigan. All of my breads are long cultured, which means they take a minimum of 48 hours to be ready for the oven. I am still pretty new to this whole endeavor, but I hope to continue to provide freshly baked bread to those looking for fantastic taste and simple ingredients.

How it all started

I began making bread for my family to ensure I knew exactly what ingredients we were eating. First of all, I started with regular sandwich bread to replace our weekly grocery buy. After a few tries, I was able to find a recipe that made my husband and kids happy. Although they were happy, I found that I preferred bread with a bit more character.

A family friend suggested that I try sourdough and unknowingly started my obsession. I was gifted a Tartine Bread cookbook and after trying a few recipes, I fell in love! It took me 7 years of failures and experimentation, but I was able to cultivate a starter and work out a recipe (along with a baking technique) that worked for me. As a result I have developed a sourdough bread that I absolutely love. Seriously, I recently traveled to Colorado with a loaf in my carry-on so I wouldn’t have to go a week without it!

Getting a little more serious

I began making more and more loaves of bread for family members and friends. Soon enough, they were asking for special orders and even having me bake loaves that they could give as gifts. I was encouraged to try new flavors and they were all happy to volunteer as taste testers! If you enjoy my barley bread, the Opiparis are to thank for helping me develop a recipe that has become a customer favorite.

Taking the plunge

During the holiday season of 2017 I had a number of people asking for custom orders. I had so much fun that I figured it was time to try to sell my bread to a wider audience. Thankfully, the Dexter Winter Marketplace had some space available for an additional vendor and I started selling at the end of January 2018. So far it has been lots of fun and I have gotten to meet some great people! Hopefully I will have a chance to continue to sell to this fantastic community!
